After a tooth is removed, the socket and surrounding ridge begin to heal and change shape. Socket preservation places graft material in the extraction site to help maintain the area for a future dental implant or another restorative treatment.
After the tooth is removed and the socket is cleaned, graft material is placed in the site. A membrane, collagen material, or sutures may be used to protect and stabilize the graft during early healing.
The material serves as a framework while the area heals. It does not create an instant implant site or guarantee that no additional grafting will ever be needed.
Tell Dr. Udy what your dentist has recommended for replacing the tooth. An implant, bridge, partial denture, orthodontic movement, or no immediate replacement can each lead to a different surgical plan.
At follow-up, Dr. Udy checks the soft tissue and healing. Imaging may be used later to determine whether the site is ready for implant placement or needs additional preparation.
